Adler Planetarium Copper Dome copy

We had the privilege of partnering with Hutchinson Design Group to replace the copper dome of the Adler Planetarium in Chicago (the first planetarium in the western Hemisphere, opened in 1930!).

Each craftsman was hand-picked for this project. The work involved fabricating each individually-sized copper panel, tapering the edges, folding, and hand-locking them on site.

The winds from Lake Michigan brought additional challenges to a complex work site. Laser levels were unusable in the weather, so we used tried-and-true water leveling to ensure the panel locks were perfect.

It was an honor help restore this Historical Chicago landmark to its original glory!
